How To Pull Up On The Right And Reverse Back

Pull up on the right and reverse back – Steps

On the test you will be asked to pull up on the right and park up behind a car or at a set point such as a lamp, and then reverse back at least two car lengths remaining close to the kerb while doing so.   You will then be asked to move off when it is safe to do so.

  1. When you approach the target car, check your centre and right mirror, put your right signal on as this makes your intentions clear to other road users.

  2. When you are around three to four car lengths away from the target car undertake a final mirror check and move across the road and park up behind the target car.  Make sure that you are not too tight to the kerb.

  3. Put the car into reverse as this will make your intentions clear to other road users.

Before moving backwards, you must complete your observation sweep from over your right shoulder all the way round to the back window looking in all mirrors and windows as you go.  This sweep must be completed every two seconds until you complete the manoeuvre.

You must stop the car if another car approaches you from either direction.  You must also stop if a pedestrian starts walking towards the car on your right.  If you see a pedestrian walking on the pavement on the other side of the road, on your left, you must keep an eye on them and if they start to cross towards your car, stop.

If you stop, you must make sure that you redo the observation sweep each time before you restart.

When reversing back keep track on how far you are from the kerb by looking in your right mirror.  You can make gentle adjustments by turning the wheel a quarter turn or so to get closer or further away from the kerb.

  4. When you have reversed back two car lengths you can stop the car.  Next follow your POM routines to move out and to rejoin your side of the road.

P – prepare the car to move

O - observations – right to left shoulder sweep looking in all windows and mirrors.  Please note that it is a right to left sweep, so we end on the side we will be moving towards.

M – manoeuvre put your left signal on and then complete your final check over your left shoulder before moving out into the road and rejoin your side of the road.
